Cuba’s activism in humanitarian law forums recognized

Panama City, Nov 16 (Prensa Latina) Cuba has been an active country in the international forums about international humanitarian law, Marisela Silva Chau, regional head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for Panama and the Caribbean, recognized on Tuesday.

In an interview with Prensa Latina, she assured that every year, this organization holds high-level dialogues with different authorities of the island, particularly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to address issues such as this and the protection of the medical missions, among other current topics.

In addition to this, the Cuban Red Cross has an “excellent” work, trajectory and experience, especially in natural disasters, thanks to the thousands of volunteers it has, and the restoration of family contact, one of the additional programs to the prevention and care in the communities, she said.

The course “Help” about health emergencies in large populations, taking place here virtually, is part of the prevention, the third pillar in the work strategy of the ICRC, which created this initiative in 1986 in conjunction with the World Health Organization and the University of Geneva.

The official said that the project seeks to promote the professionalization of the humanitarian assistance in health emergencies and facilitate the exchange of experience among the different professionals who are important to define a multidisciplinary response to this kind of emergency.
