They added that between four and six million more people are in the same situation, but do not know it. The worst thing is that, although the growth of the disease accelerated since the 1980’s and a health emergency declaration has been in force since 2016, very little has been achieved to reverse its impact.

The warning was made by Carlos Aguilar, director of Nutrition at the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition in Mexico.

The specialist pointed out that evidence of the problem is in every hospitals where the sick come to get attention.

Most are admitted with high glucose levels and less than half are discharged with optimal parameters, according to a report made for the Ministry of Health on the situation of patients without access to social security institutions.
