The disaster occurred last Friday in the capital and the authorities announced the creation of a specialized group to investigate the causes of the catastrophe, the most serious of its kind in the history of this small West African country.
So far it is known that the tanker exploded after colliding with another vehicle and that the high death toll was due to a combination of factors: the crowding of people collecting gasoline from the vehicle and the flames of the fire.
Among the fatalities were the passengers of a public transport bus that was traveling through the upper class district of Wellington, the scene of the catastrophe.
The Sierra Leonean President, Julius Maada Bio, addressed the country in which he promised assistance to the nearly 100 injured, many of whom are in critical condition.
