“With all the sovereignty achieved with our vaccines, #Cuba will apply booster doses of #SoberanaPlus or #Abdala to over-18-years-of-age population, starting 6 months from the completion of the vaccination plan. Making what we have achieved sustainable is the great challenge. #CubaPorLaVida”, he wrote on Twitter.
This process, scheduled to begin on November 8, is necessary to control the health emergency, specially taking into account that the nation is making measures more flexible as part of the ‘new normal’ and will open international borders from November 15, according to experts.
The application of Cuban immunizers will allow a long-term response and a selection of memory cells, which are responsible for the production of antibodies when facing the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, that causes the disease.
Director of Scientific Policy of the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries Group (BioCubaFarma), Rolando Pérez, recently explained that there is preliminary evidence of an increase in the immune response with a booster dose in risk group from a clinical study with Mambisa, Soberana Plus and Soberana 01 vaccines.
Pérez said these results make it possible to request authorization for use from the Center for State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (Cecmed), the national regulatory entity.
The booster dose is not exclusive to Cuba since 27 countries have approved it, 12 of them from Latin America, and in the process other vaccines can be combined, he said.
