Macri asks to be acquitted in espionage case

expresidente de Argentina Mauricio Macri
Buenos Aires, Nov 3 (Prensa Latina) Without answering questions, former Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri presented today a brief and asked to be acquitted in the case of alleged espionage to the relatives of the 44 officers of the ARA San Juan submarine.

Surrounded by television cameras and with the support of several of his former officials, the former head of State went to the acting federal judge of the Buenos Aires city of Dolores, Martin Bava, whom he had described as incompetent and fought to be removed from the case.

Following last Thursday’s failed presentation, when he could not make his case because he had not been relieved of the duty of confidentiality, this time he arrived at the court and, according to press media such as the Telam agency and Pagina 12, the former president left a written document and did not answer any questions.

Now, the magistrate will have to resolve Macri’s procedural situation in the next 10 days, although he may do it sooner or later. The former head of State has claimed to be a victim of persecution and he again lately claimed that he did not spy on anyone, and that he never saw any report from any family member of the ARA San Juan, which disappeared in 2017, or from any other vessel, after pointing against the Government.

According to Judge Bava’s ruling, there was “a national political interest that, at the end of the chain, responded to the then President.”

The lawsuits of the relatives of the 44 officers of the San Juan in the last hours requested preventive imprisonment for the former president, in view of the danger for the judicial process of a travel authorization requested by Macri to go to Saudi Arabia on November 15.

The cases of surveillance committed by the intelligence services under Macri’s administration cover a large number of personalities and came to light in 2020 through the current Comptroller, Cristina Caamaño, after several documents were found within the agency.
