In a message on Twitter, the Foreign Ministry of the Island greeted the date of the proclamation of the Republic of Panama.
After declaring independence from Spain on November 28, 1821, Panama voluntarily joined the ‘Gran Colombia’, a former state made up of today’s Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Panama in most of its territory.
After several attempts for separation, the latter managed to break from Colombia and establish its own independent government on November 3, 1903.
Cuba and the neighboring country reestablished diplomatic relations in September 2005, based on friendship, cooperation and beneficial exchange for their peoples.
Since then, bilateral ties have been strengthened in areas like health, literacy, sports, agriculture, maritime transport, trade, migration, tourism, culture, sports and the environment.
