By a majority of votes, Cenelles’s work grabbed the attention of the first edition of the contest, forced to take the evaluation of the jury, chaired by visual artist Gabriel Davalos, to virtual platforms due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but capable of summoning more than 250 artists from the five continents.
Among nearly 1,700 works submitted, the image of the Cuban creator stood out, which shows a young dancer waving a Cuban flag in the streets of Havana, while the National Capitol with its golden dome can be seen in the background.
Dedicated to extolling the work of Cubans from all parts of the world, the event honored Josep Guindo (Spain), Nancy Reyes, Graciela Gomez, Maria Eugenia Bode and Francisco Paco Bou, from Cuba, and posthumously Tonatiuh Gutierrez (Mexico), Alfredo Cannatello (Italy) and Jose Luis Estrada Betancourt (Cuba) for their life’s work.
The award-winning photos came from Mexico, Australia, Peru, Italy, Spain, Germany, Brazil and Cuba, and will be exhibited in public spaces in the capital as a tribute to Alonso’s 101st birthday (Dec. 21).
