On its Twitter account, the Cuban institution highlighted Barnet’s ‘indelible legacy in all arts’ and described him as a ‘tireless and versatile artist’ until his death in January 2021.
As a filmmaker, he left Cuban cinema a musical classic, ‘La bella del Alhambra’ (The Beauty of the Alhambra, 1989), with which he was highly acclaimed, and among other prizes, he received the Goya Award for the best Spanish-language foreign film.
Among his many acknowledgements, Barnet received the Order of Arts and Letters granted in France, was recognized with the Distinction for National Culture and won the Honorary Coral Award at the 38th edition of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, in Havana.
