The National Research Institute of Earth Science and Disaster Resilience of Japan reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale and occurred near the sub-prefecture of Nemuro-Hokkaido.

According to the source, the quake occurred at a shallow depth of 44.3 kilometers below the epicenter on Tuesday night at 20:03 (local time).

Reports of very weak tremors were received in Nemuro (population 31,200) located 30 kilometers from the epicenter, and Shibetsu (21,700), 82 kms away.
