Italy’s ties with Latin America and Caribbean highlighted in Rome

Rome, Oct 26 (Prensa Latina) President Sergio Mattarella on Tuesday affirmed that Italy, Europe and the Latin American and Caribbean region are called to make together a concrete and incisive contribution to face global challenges.

In a message read by Deputy Foreign Minister Marina Sereni during the opening ceremony of the 10th Italy-Latin America and Caribbean Conference, the head of State stressed that the meeting coincides with the period of Italian Presidency of the G20, dedicated to the most crucial issues for building a common future.

A post-pandemic future characterized by less inequality and greater environmental sustainability, the President said after wishing success to the meeting, to which he referred to as ‘the best occasion to reflect on shared objectives.’

For his part, Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio pointed out that with the holding of the event, this European nation wants to contribute to the return of Latin America and the Caribbean to the European agenda as a strategic centrality.

Among Italy’s historical, social, political and economic ties with Latin America and the Caribbean, Di Maio pointed out that more than two million Italian citizens are living in that subcontinent, where more than 3,000 Italian companies are operating with sales of more than 70 billion euros.

Seventeen foreign ministers and 10 deputy ministers are attending the meeting, organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Italian-Latin American Institute.

They address, in three commissions, issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda and the post-pandemic recovery.
