When announcing his appearance in the main body of the UN on the 9th of November, the president informed that day he will also meet with Secretary General Antonio Guterres, and clarified he had no other scheduled activity.
‘I arrive on the 8th at night, and early next day I am at the UN, and in the afternoon I return to Mexico. I’m just going to preside over the Security Council meeting’.
He had previously anticipated that the speech still in preparation in the Council will deal with what he considers the main problem in the world: corruption that produces inequality. The fight against corruption is one of the main political banners of the ruler since he was in the opposition.
This will be López Obrador’s second trip abroad since he assumed power in December 2018, after he visited then-United States President Donald Trump in Washington in July 2020, on occasion of the entry into force of the Free Trade Agreement with Canada.
He also clarified that it will not be possible for him to meet with compatriots living in the United States as he wishes, but instead he will send them a recorded message and ask the consul general to attend to the requests of the migrants.
On a giant screen, he reiterated, I give them a message so they can see it because I will not be able to approach them, as there are security measures that prevent it.
