Sri lankan prime minister received the Cuban ambassador

Colombo, Oct 24 (Prensa Latina) The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, received Cuban ambassador, Andrés González, and both parties stressed the desire to continue strengthening bilateral relations, it was announced today in this capital.

González recently paid a courtesy visit to the Sri Lankan president at his official residence in Temple Trees and the ties of friendship between the two nations were highlighted, underlined a diplomatic source from the Caribbean island.

The parties reviewed the bilateral agenda in a meeting which was also attended by the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, Professor G. L. Peiris, and the Foreign Secretary, Admiral (r) Jayanath Colombage.

Last week, the Minister of Education of Sri Lanka, Dinesh Gunawardena, and the ambassador of the Antillean nation highlighted the interest of the two countries to strengthen academic exchange.

Gunawardena – leader of the left-wing Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (United People’s Front) party – recalled the cooperation offered by Havana since the beginning of bilateral diplomatic ties, and highlighted medical aid during the 2004 tsunami.

The Sri Lankan parliamentarian and president of the Sri Lanka-Cuba Friendship Association highlighted the granting of scholarships to young people from the South Asian country to pursue university degrees on the Caribbean island.
