In a statement on the occasion of the United Nations Day, to be celebrated on Sunday, the Spanish politician highlighted the relevance of that organization for global stability, since it was established in 1945.
We are constantly and rapidly evolving, so a strong and dynamic partnership between the UN and the EU is more important than ever. Together we must respond to threats such as climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic, he noted.
In addition, he said that both organizations must work to guarantee the protection of human rights, the fundamental values of democracy and the rule of law.
The world has changed considerably since the foundation of the UN 76 years ago. For reasons of effectiveness and legitimacy, the organization must be fully equipped to face increasingly complex challenges and respond to the growing demands of citizens, he said.
He reiterated the will of the EU to continue supporting the UN, considered an indispensable force to promote a truly inclusive multilateralism.
