US administration steps up drone program to monitor migrant caravans

Washington, Oct 19 (Prensa Latina) US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will implement a drone program to monitor the migrant caravans heading toward border, according to the NBC network.

The DHS objective is to monitor migrant caravans heading to the United States, such as 15,000 Haitians deported from Texas in September.

The monitoring, according to NBC, will be rolled out from setting up a drone program over trucks and migrant camps at the borders, as well as an increased communication with intelligence agencies and authorities of central American nations.

President Joe Biden´s administration has already implemented the biometric monitoring by using facial recognition technology to collect, process and store sensitive information on asylum seekers in the United States, Los Angeles Times reported.

These decisions come as Biden’s immigration agenda has been lashed out by Democrats and Republicans who said the current US administration vowed more humane approach and still applies policies from President Donald Trump-era (2017-2021).

According to analysts, the White House is trying to resume its promises on promoting more ‘humanitarian’ immigration laws, an idea that with the strict measures applied recently is increasingly far from reality.

Biden´s administration is planning to reestablish the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), a program known as ¨Remain in Mexico¨, which forces asylum seekers to wait on the other side of the southern border for their immigration hearings.

There are also concerns about Washington’s continued use of Title 42, a public health order first used by Trump as an excuse to deport migrants amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
