Egypt’s poverty rate falls

Cairo, Oct 19 (Prensa Latina) Egypt's poverty rate fell 2.8 percent during the 2019-2020 fiscal year, recording 29.7 percent of the population, the state's statistics agency CAPMAS revealed on Tuesday.

According to the agency, the figure reflects the success of the State’s efforts to achieve social justice in conjunction with the economic reforms implemented by the Government.

CAPMAS pointed out in a communique that extreme poverty went from 6.2 percent to 4.5 percent.

The agency considered that the increase in family size is a cause and a consequence of poverty.

The 80.6 percent of individuals who live in households with 10 or more members are poor, a figure that drops to 48.1 percent in families with six or seven members, and 7.5 percent in the case of families with fewer than four members.
