Cuba and eternal tribute to Ernesto Che Guevara

Havana, Oct 18 (Prensa Latina) Still overwhelmed by the news of his death, on October 18, 1967, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, paid tribute to Commander Ernesto Che Guevara at a solemn evening gala attended by the people.

We are told that one million Cubans listened to Fidel Castro amid an overwhelming silence. This confirmed what the Cuban people had learned three days earlier: the capture and subsequent assassination of the revolutionary fighter on October 9 of that year in Bolivia, under orders from the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Fidel Castro spoke at the Revolution Square in Havana about who was ‘one of the most familiar, one of the most admired, one of the most loved and, without a doubt, the most extraordinary of our comrades in the Revolution.’

His immediate disposition to always carry out the most difficult tasks and to constantly risk his life, his indomitable tenacity and will of steel were traits of his character evoked by Fidel Castro.

He also mentioned the different responsibilities he had held in Cuba after the triumph of the Revolution as the president of the National Bank, Minister of Industry, and as the greatest promoter of volunteer work, all this before his departure to liberate other peoples worldwide.

Che was also one of the founders of the Latin American News Agency, Prensa Latina, at a time when Cuba needed to defend itself from the media campaigns against the emerging Revolution.

As Fidel Castro said, the artist may die, but what will not die in any way is the art to which he devoted his intelligence and to which he dedicated his life.
