Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails go on hunger strike

Ramallah, Oct 16 (Prensa Latina) Hundreds of Palestinians in Israeli prisons, most of them members of the Islamic Jihad group, are on a hunger strike for the fourth consecutive day in protest against the repressive measures applied by Israel.

The Palestinian Prisoners Club stressed in a statement that the tension in the prisons of that country escalated after the decision of at least two inmates in the Raymod facility to also reject the intake of water.

The source specified that the rest of the Palestinian factions will join the strike if the Tel Aviv government does not respond to the minimum demands made by the detainees.

The Islamic Jihad warned two days ago that it will use force against Israel if the authorities insist on punitive measures against the thousands of Palestinian prisoners kept behind bars.

The Palestinian Society of Prisoners estimated at around 400 the number of detainees who stopped eating, the majority from Islamic Jihad, although the Israeli press claims that there are about 250.

The aim of the strike is to denounce the punishment measures implemented by the Israel Prison Service (IPS).

The inmates are in a ‘state of open confrontation and clash’ with the IPS, Hassan Abed Rabbo, Media Advisor to the Palestinian Prisoners and Former Prisoners Affairs Commission, told Al Aqsa radio.
