Court ratifies disqualification of Peru’s former president

Lima, Oct 14 (Prensa Latina) A Peruvian court rejected on Wednesday an appeal by former President Martín Vizcarra that proposed to recognize his election as a congressman and ratified his disqualification from holding public office for 10 years.

The sixth constitutional court of Lima decided to dismiss the appeal filed, so that the National Jury of Elections (JNE) grant him the credential of congressman elected last April for the period 2021-26.

The claim alleged that the disqualification, due to signs of corruption, was approved by Parliament days after the general elections in April this year, in which Vizcarra was the candidate for Parliament with the highest number of votes.

The opinion adverse to the ex-governor indicates that ‘in no case can anyone access the post of congressman who is disqualified from the exercise of public function.’

Before the ruling, the ex-president invoked international judicial records that in a similar case ordered to favor a disqualified candidate, because the right of those who voted for him to be represented must prevail, and said that he will appeal to those instances.

Vizcarra was disqualified in April of this year from holding public office, including elective, for 10 years, as the Congress of the Republic considered that it violated the constitution by ordering that he be secretly and improperly inoculated with a vaccine against Covid-19 under investigation.

On the other hand, the former president is investigated by the Public Ministry for collecting bribes in exchange for public works contracts, when he was governor of the southern region of Moquegua, which was denounced by businessmen who say they paid him millionaire bribes.

The former governor was vacated (dismissed) in November 2020 for these accusations after a summary investigation by the opposition Parliament and is also pending another investigation for the irregular hiring as a consultant to the Ministry of Culture of a singer without qualification for the position.
