Civil war costs Yemen millions of dollars in losses

Aden, Oct 13 (Prensa Latina) Yemen's Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Waid Batheeb affirmed that the country lost 90 billion dollars since the uprising of the Houthi militia seven years ago, SABA news agency reported on Wednesday.

According to the news outlet, Batheeb noted that the national currency depreciated by 180 percent as a result of the war, which began following the rebel group’s offensive in 2014, when large regions in northern Yemen, included Sana’a, the capital, were occupied.

During a virtual meeting with World Bank officials, the minister explained the economic challenges his country is experiencing.

United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen David Gressly warned two days ago that some 20 million people in this nation, two-thirds of the total, need urgent humanitarian aid.

Yemen is on the brink of famine, said the official, who estimated the number of children at risk of starving at 400,000.

In its most recent report, published in December, the United Nations highlighted that the armed conflict has killed or injured thousands of civilians, 4.4 million people are internally displaced and 13 million individuals have become impoverished.
