Uruguay highlights acquisition of Cuban vaccines against Covid-19

Montevideo, Oct 5 (Press) The acquisition of Cuban vaccines Abdala and Soberana 02 to face Covid-19, by Venezuela, Nicaragua and Vietnam, is highlighted today by the Uruguayan website Subrayado.

In a wide coverage, it reviews the announcement made by the Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro, of the arrival of a batch of 900 000 doses this Sunday out of the 15 million doses expected to be obtained.

The president set the goal of immunizing 70 percent of the country’s 30 million inhabitants, according to the media.

The site also reported that Nicaraguan health regulating authorities approved over the weekend the emergency use of Abdala and Soberana 02 vaccines, developed by Cuban laboratories.

In this respect, the vice-president, Rosario Murillo, added that they will be administered to more than two million children and teenagers from October 20.

On the other hand, the Vietnamese government authorized the acquisition of 10 million doses, while Mexico and Argentina were interested in the production of inoculators from the Caribbean country, which has already initiated contacts towards recognition by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Subrayado summarized the technological basis of the Cuban inoculating formulas and highlighted their efficacy of more than 90 percent.

He recalled that since 1962, under the U.S. blockade, Cuba began to develop its own vaccines in the 1980s, when it discovered the first one against meningitis B, and currently almost 80 percent of the vaccines included in its immunization program are manufactured on the island.
