During a speech on the occasion of the 111th anniversary of the Proclamation of the First Portuguese Republic (1910-1926), the president called for an end to discrimination and reminded that their country is the result of the fusion of various cultures, religions and customs.
He also pointed out that both foreigners who come to this country and Portuguese who live abroad ‘contribute to the formation of a national identity and give it universal projection’.
The state will never overcome the challenges of the economy and knowledge if we do not learn how to value the nearly six million Portuguese who are around the world and the 600 thousand migrants who are here, he said.
On the other hand, he highlighted the need to bring about two million people out of poverty and called to promote initiatives that allow technological development, but also protect the environment.
Once the Covid-19 pandemic has been overcome, Portugal has a unique and unrepeatable opportunity in the coming years to rebuild futures and renew hopes and dreams, he said.
