According to a report on local television, 421 people arrived in Baracoa and Maisí, in the eastern province of Guantanamo, in boats of precarious conditions and putting their lives at risk.
Once received at the facilities, Haitians are investigated to identify possible diseases and samples are taken for the detection of diseases such as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, malaria, hepatitis and Covid-19.
According to a statement released by the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Haitian citizens arrived in Cuba through different provinces in the center and east of the country since last September 11th.
The Cuban authorities maintain contact on the matter with the Government of Port-au-Prince, and carry out the pertinent steps for the safe and voluntary return of these people.
All this in correspondence with the bonds of brotherhood, cooperation and solidarity that characterize the bilateral relationship, and by virtue of the international commitments on migration to which Cuba is a party, the Ministry of Foreign Relations remarked.
On several occasions, the Foreign Ministry reiterated the need to work for a safe, orderly and regular movement, which will only be possible if the root causes of this phenomenon, caused by the prevailing unjust and unequal international order, are addressed.
