Lebanese PM ratifies date for parliamentary elections

Beirut, Sep 29 (Prensa Latina) Lebanon's Prime Minister Najib Mikati ratified the agreed date of March 27, 2022, to hold the parliamentary elections, The Daily Star noted on Wednesday.

There is no sign that those elections are cancelled or postponed, he said.

The referendum was scheduled for May 2022, but as it coincides with the Islamic month of fasting, Ramadan, the Government decided to bring it forward.

Mikati also ruled out the possibility of privatizing or selling state assets to alleviate Lebanon’s foreign debt estimated at some 90 billion dollars, equivalent to 170 percent of the Gross Domestic Product.

After a recent tour of France and the United Kingdom, the Lebanese executive chief announced a tour of Arab countries in search of support.

However, he excluded Syria from that tour in anticipation that sanctions imposed by the United States fall on Lebanon.
