The epicenter was located 22 km (≈13.7 mi) southeast of Heraklion, the capital of the island, at a depth of 10.7 km (≈6.6 mi).
A similar event took place on the island yesterday, prompting hundreds of people to spend the night in tents or vehicles, according to Greek newspaper Kathimerini, which later reported the death of a person as a result of the collapse of a church.
This region of the Mediterranean Sea is seismically and volcanically unstable owing to the confluence of the Eurasian and African tectonic plates.
