Haiti receives almost 3,500 Haitians deported from US

Port-au-Prince, Sep 28 (Prensa Latina) Almost 3,500 Haitians returned from the United States since that northern country began massive deportations in the face of a new migration crisis, meanwhile, more flights are expected to arrive in this Tuesday.

The International Organization for Migration informed that 3,456 Haitians returned from September 19 to 27, nearly 30 percent of which are children, many of whom were not even born in the country.

The Organization, which belongs to the United Nations system, estimates that an average of 400 people arrive in the country every day, most of them to the Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, although since last week, others also did it to the northern city of Cap-Haïtien.

For its part, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned that more than two in three Haitians who returned from the United States are women and children, included some newborns.

UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore pointed out that Haiti is experiencing a new cycle of crisis, marked by natural disasters, gang violence and the Covid-19 pandemic, while those who are returning to the country have no adequate protection, which makes them even more vulnerable to poverty, insecurity and displacement.
