According to a note from the presidential office, the president will join a virtual ceremony hosted by the Western Cape province under the theme ‘The Year of Charlotte Maxeke: Celebrating South Africa’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.’
The Government has declared 2021 as the ‘Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke’ to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the pioneering South African human rights activist. Her legacy has paved the way for generations of anti-apartheid social activists, the text explains.
Mannya Maxeke is also an example at present for people working for a better society, as well as the economic conditions for all South Africans, the document adds.
Heritage Day 2021, according to the note, celebrates the national human treasures, living legends that are the repository of traditions and culture, knowledge and accumulation of intellectual capital.
