Situation of Haitian migrants in Mexico remains serious

Mexico, Sep 24 (Prensa Latina) The situation of Haitian migrants in Mexico trying unsuccessfully to cross the Rio Grande to settle in the United States remains dramatic, as the interested parties themselves denounced.

They explained in statements to the press that the conditions are very harsh, because when they cross the waters of the river from Acuña to reach the shore in the US town of Del Río, they are attacked by border patrols, and are forced to return to the Mexican side.

Mexico launched a police operation on Thusrday to dissuade them from continuing their attempts, but they respond that they will not do so because they are being returned to Haiti, even though most of them come from other countries such as Brazil and Colombia where they lived on the streets.

They assure that they have run out of money because have given what little they had they to the coyotes (human traffickers) to take them to Acuña or to get them under a roof to spend the night. It is not known for sure how many Haitians there are in the border area, but there are thousands.

The airlift established by the United States is not enough and has only re-embarked just over a thousand people. When asked why they do not return to Tapachula on the Mexican border with Guatemala, they declare that there are no conditions or work to stay there. Others simply point out that they are not turning back and their goal is to enter the United States.

There is concern among the authorities of Mexico because the first cold fronts are already beginning and the conditions for spending the night will deteriorate because there are not enough shelters, and it will also be more difficult for them to cross the river.

The policemen of the National Institute of Migration announced that they will verify the situation of foreigners so that they return to the places where they entered their refugee applications in Mexico, in order to give them continuity.
