Cuba thanks IAEA for help in times of pandemic

Havana, Sep 22 (Prensa Latina) Cuba on Wednesday thanked the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its help to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, the development of nuclear applications and the fulfillment of the commitments assumed by the country.

The progress made in strengthening the nuclear security regime and the sustained work of the Ibero-American Forum of Radiological and Nuclear Regulatory Bodies was also highlighted at the 65th regular meeting of the IAEA General Conference, which is taking place from September 20-24 in Vienna, Austria.

The in-person and virtual meeting was a propitious space to denounce the impact of the United States blockade against Havana and its effects on the implementation of technical cooperation projects of that international organization in which Cuba participates.

A press release from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) noted that the Cuban delegation was headed by Deputy Minister Jose Fidel Santana Nuñez, and was made up of representatives of the International Relations Department and the Ministry of the Interior, among others.

On the other hand, the IAEA acknowledged the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences (INCA) of Cuba for its contributions to the development of varieties of crops that are resistant to climate change.

Cuban delegate Marlen Redondo Falcón highlighted the work done by INCA scientists and workers, as a leading institution in the execution of genetic improvement programs through irradiation techniques and biotechnology.

Together with a dozen institutions from around the world, the INCA’s Applied Nuclear Techniques Group received exceptional recognition for the use of isotopic procedures to induce genetic variations, which promote better yields and increase agricultural production.
