Consensus in Uruguay in defense of Colonization Institute

Montevideo, Aug 15 (Prensa Latina) Former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica and the senator who leades the Cabildo Abierto party, Guido Manini, agreed on Wednesday on opposing the extraction of funds from the National Colonization Institute (INC).

Both poliicians coincided hours ago in the camp set up by a group of settlers to protest against this measure, which is contained in the bill on Budgetary Accountability under discussion in the Senate.

Mujica told reporters that he came to ‘greet some fellow countrymen’ who he has known for many years, under the glow of a bonfire and among participants who were drinking the traditional mate tea.

For his part, Manini noted that he attended the camp ‘to talk and listen to people,’ and reiterated that the legislative group that he leads will vote against the executive proposal and will look for another source of financing to regularize the situation of 240,000 Uruguayans in settlements in urban peripheries.

The defense of INC resources is part of the demands from the general strike staged by the union movement and other social forces, including settlers and rural workers who arrived in Montevideo to join the strike.
