Polling stations open in first electoral phase in Argentina

Buenos Aires, Sep 12 (Prensa Latina) Polling stations opened early on Sunday in the Open, Simultaneous and Compulsory primaries (PASO), where the Argentineans define the candidates for a seat in the Nation's Congress.

During this first stage of the legislative elections, nearly 34 million citizens eligible to vote, many of them aged 16 who are voting for the first time, will elect the candidates who will be on the ballot on November 14, for one of the 127 seats to be renewed in the Chamber of Deputies and 24 seats in the Senate.

Voting began normally amid the atypical context of Covid-19, which forced authorities to provide a larger number of places to vote and prevent crowds of people in the more than 17,000 polling stations.

In these elections, the largest number of voters is concentrated in Buenos Aires province, followed by Cordoba, Santa Fe and the federal capital.

The polling stations will be open until 18:00 hours, local time, and the first provisional results will be made public around 23:00 hours, local time, according to authorities.
