Cuba highlights right to food at Latin American event

Havana, Sep 10 (Prensa Latina) Cuba highlighted the right to food and reported on the drafting of a law on sovereignty and nutritional security by participating in a Latin American and Caribbean event, specialized sources reported on Friday.

According to a press release from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), published here on Friday, more than 60 universities from 16 countries held the 10th Regional Meeting virtually of the Observatory of the Right to Food of Latin America and the Caribbean (ODA-LAC) from September 6 to 9.

Cuba was represented by the University of Havana, whose Faculty of Law is the focal point of the Observatory, as well as by the National Technical Team of the ‘Strengthening policies for sustainable food security in Cuba’ collaboration project of the SAS Cuba Country Program, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG) and FAO.

Cuban Dr. Maritza de la Caridad McCormack, who is a professor at the Law School of the Uversity of Havana, Master Mayra Cruz, assistant professor of that institution and head of the Department of Agrarian Policy of the Legal Directorate of MINAG, spoke at the event.

Cruz highlighted that Cuba’s main actions regarding the Right to Food in the last two years are framed in the constitutional recognition of this, in the approval of the National Plan for Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Education and in the development of its legal instrumentation.

The meeting also presented the generalities of the process of construction of the Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutrition Security Law in Cuba, with special emphasis on academic activities.
