‘Sad day for Mexico,’ President López Obrador says

Mexico, Sep 8 (Prensa Latina) President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, described yesterday as a sad day due to a flood in Hidalgo city resulting in 17 deaths in a hospital and an earthquake that was felt in 11 states.

In his daily morning press conference, the president gave details of the flooding due to the overflow of Tula river, whose waters flooded the center of the city of Hidalgo and the social hospital, where 17 people died.

It was very unfortunate, very sad, and the families of the victims are being taken care of, and we are still on alert because there are other rivers and dams overflowing because it rained a lot and still does in many states of Mexico, he warned.

He added that ‘they are vigilant and asking people to look for shelters and move to higher ground. Authorities attend to all the victims, and the federal government and the state of Hidalgo are helping in everything they can’.

At the same time, he explained, there was a very strong earthquake before 21:00 local time yesterday night and it was felt very strong in Mexico City, with the epicenter in Acapulco, Guerrero state, but fortunately there is no major damage, and only one death of a young man riding a motorcycle in Guerrero.

The governor of that territory, López Obrador said, reported that there were only some structure collapses, there is presently no interruption on roads, traffic was rehabilitated, although air traffic was suspended in Acapulco, there was no sign of high tide on the Guerrero coast, either, and no serious damage.
