Russian Foreign Ministry unclear on G7 meeting on Afghanistan

Moscow, Sep 5 (Prensa Latina) Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that Russia was advised by France and Germany on a meeting on Afghanistan to be held outside the G7 format.

The official commented on the statement by Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi that a meeting of the Group of Seven (Germany, Canada, United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom) is planned for next week at the level of foreign ministers with the participation of Russia and China.

Zakharova pointed out that there is still no confirmation of the format in which the meeting will be held. ‘Our partners clearly lack a clear understanding of what they want from themselves and the world around them,’ she said.

On September 2nd, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov reported that President Vladimir Putin will attend the extraordinary G20 summit to analyze the situation in Afghanistan, if it is agreed to hold it.

The politician commented that Italy, as president of the G20, is speaking with other countries to clarify whether it is necessary to organize an emergency summit before October. In case the decision is approved, Peskov clarified that the Russian president will participate.
