Over 200,000 US children infected with Covid-19

Washington, Sep 3 (Prensa Latina) More than 204,000 children in the United States were infected with Covid-19 last week, as reported by the American Academy of Pediatrics concerned about the lack of mandatory wear of facemasks in schools.

With the opening to in-person learning, the number of Covid-19 children accounted for 22.4% of the total infected in the country during the past seven days, so the overall toll amounted to 500,000 since August 9.

Children under 12 are not yet eligible for vaccines, so health experts agreed that the mandatory wear of facemasks is the most effective tool to curb infections in children during their stay in schools.

Covid-19 patients rate increase again in the United States, so the toll of hospitalizations is also higher at all ages, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Dr. Rochelle Walensky stressed.

Specialists blamed Delta variant for the infections surge and strongly recommended the wear of facemasks for all students, professors and back-up staff, regardless of vaccination status.

However, some states reject preventive measures, such as Texas and Florida, whose governors had a backlash against districts requiring the wear of masks at schools.
