Puebla Group applauds Mexico’s proposal on regional cooperation

Buenos Aires, Sep 1 (Prensa Latina) The Puebla Group expressed today its support for Mexico's proposal to create a new organization that would serve as a space for regional discussion with the voices of the Latin American peoples, without impositions.

According to the progressive alliance, the new organization could be the result of the convergence in a new CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States), strengthened and empowered of the current sub-regional integration mechanisms, or the enlargement of the Union of South American Nations, which is already being recomposed with Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

‘What has happened in recent years with the Organization of American States (OAS) has made evident the not very neutral way in which it manages the hegemonic US interests in the region, supported by an ephemeral group of conservative governments,’ the Puebla Group detailed in a statement.

The Group, which includes personalities from 16 countries, also adds that such situation has been demonstrated by the abusive interventions of Secretary General Luis Almagro in the legitimization of the coup d’état in Bolivia and the launching of punitive military operations against Venezuela from the Colombian border.

Likewise, with the endorsement given to the former Trump government of former to appoint as President of the Inter-American Development Bank a person who breaks with the long tradition of illustrious Latin Americans who have occupied its presidency.

The Group believes that the new, empowered and independent organization could relaunch a new space for relations among the region and the United States of America and Canada, more robust and constructive and aligned with the priorities of both sides, the Group concludes.
