At the opening of UNDP´s 2nd ordinary meeting, its Administrator Achim Steiner claimed that new spaces are open for innovative policies and approaches regarding the world our humanity wishes to build.
Opening the event, which will be held through Sept. 2, Steiner also urged the international community to assist 500 million people have access to clean energy, and promote the investment of more than $1 trillion to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
‘These are ambitious goals and, precisely, that is where their value lies. We strongly believe that the world can meet these goals. The experience gained with Covid-19 and during the last four years of change, has taught us that UNDP can be a transformative agent wherever and whenever it is necessary.’
Steiner enlightened that UNDP has extended support to 119 nations – 80% of all developing countries – to improve their vows to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate pivotal capital flows to meet SDGs. In this regard, he mentioned the recent issuance of $5.5 billion in bonds by the New Development Bank and the Governments of Indonesia, Mexico and Uzbekistan.
Steiner also stressed that such transformations require a substantial public and private resource injection, bearing in mind there is enough wealth worldwide, but it has not yet been oriented towards UN´s 2030 Agenda, hence the need to promote an over $1 trillion investment.
