This is how Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador responded to a question on the decision of the Court of Justice to order Joe Biden’s executive to reinstate Donald Trump’s policy known as Stay in Mexico to not receive those who carry out migratory steps.

The President said that he referred to yesterday’s statement from the Foreign Ministry, in which it was pointed out that such decision is an internal matter of the United States that does not bind the Mexican Government at all, and that he would not give his opinion beyond that position.

He reiterated that his administration is addressing the underlying problem, seeking investment for development, jobs and welfare in the Central American countries, and that people are not forced to migrate because they do not leave their homes and families for pleasure, but rather out of necessity.

He insisted that a social problem cannot be solved with coercive measures, and the causes must be sought and solved. We are trying to convince the U.S. Government to invest in development so that people have options and can work and be happy where they were born.

At the same time, he said, we are proposing a program to extend temporary work visas, since Mexican and Central American labor is needed in the United States and Canada, where there is not enough.

Lopez Obrador advocated applying a policy of not rejecting migration right and left as now, but instead organizing this flow, ordering it and, at the same time, helping the development of the countries of origin so that they are not forced to emigrate. ef/abo/mgt/lma
