Putin believes United Party will keep its parliamentary majority

Moscow, Aug 22 (Prensa Latina) Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday expressed his hope that the ruling United Russia party will keep the parliamentary majority in the election for the State Duma (lower house) in mid-September.

At a meeting with federal candidates of this party for the coming election, the president said that the party’s work allowed the country to overcome the crisis caused by Covid-19 faster than in many other states, Interfax news agency reported.

Putin further said that they have almost fully reestablished the economic levels that they had before the pandemic, and that creates a good foundation to solve the issues that continue emerging now.

United Russia has 334 of the 450 seats at the State Duma of the Russian Parliament.

The electoral campaign in Russia has entered its final stretch: the election will be held in less than a month and will determine the balance of forces at the State Duma for the next five years.

Under a presidential decree, the election was slated for September 19. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) exercised its right and decided to hold it in three days: September 17, 18 and 19.
