China’s legislature endorses amendment on a third child

Beijing, Aug 20 (Prensa Latina) China's National People's Congress (Parliament) on Friday amended the Family Planning Law to allow couples to have up to three children, an initiative aimed at counteracting low birth rate and people aging.

Upon its new period of session concluded, the Standing Committee of that legislative body endorsed the Government’s decision and also the end of measures such as fines for couples that violate the law to have more children than they are permitted.

The amendment includes support actions such as exploring parental leave, tax reduction and the establishment of more nursery facilities in residential communities, public areas and workplaces.

Overall, the State plans to end the requirement to take into account the number of children in order to give citizens access to housing, school enrollment or job applications.

Apart from this issue, the Chinese Parliament passed laws to protect doctors who provide off-duty first aid and another to expand legal aid in the country.
