Vazquez had a shot of 19.73 meters in his sixth and last attempt, thus winning the gold medal in a spectacular way.
With this shot, the Cuban athlete beat Belorussian competitor Yauheni Bryhi, who had been the leader of the competition since the first round with a personal record of 19.70 meters.
This was Cuba’s first gold medal at the championship, in addition to the bronze medal won also on Thursday by javelin thrower Yiselena Ballar.
Ballar threw the javelin 55.48 meters to win the bronze medal, after champion and world record holder Adriana Vilagos (61.46 m), from Serbia, and Greek athlete Elina Tzenko, silver medalist, with 59.60 meters.
Meanwhile, Clayton, with only 17 years of age, won the gold medal for Jamaica at the 100 meters race, with a personal record of 11.09 seconds.
