Malaysia’s prime minister resigns

Kuala Lumpur, Aug 16 (Prensa Latina) Malaysia's Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin resigned on Monday under increasing pressure by the opposition and widespread criticism to his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the request of King Abdullah of Pahang, Yassin will remain as a ‘caretaker’ prime minister until Parliament elects a new leader.

During a nationwide television speech, Yassin attributed his resignation to ‘greedy power parties’ and politicians eager to enrich themselves at the cost of public goods.

He also alleged that he did everything possible to lead national efforts to the country amid an unprecedented economic and health crisis.

In his 17 months in Government, Yassin made balances to avoid the attacks by the opposition, but earlier this month, the political party United Malays National Organization withdrew support for the prime minister and left him in minority in the Legislature.
