Ethiopia thanks Cuba for support at Human Rights Council

Havana, Aug 14 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's support for Ethiopia at the United Nations Human Rights Council on July 13 was appreciated by Ambassador in Havana Shibru Mamo.

The Council’s resolution does not take into account the ongoing investigations by the Human Rights Office and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, the diplomat stressed in statements to Prensa Latina.

He underlined that ‘Cuban-Ethiopian relations are historic, long-standing, deeply rooted and with a solid foundation based on blood during the defense of Ethiopia’s sovereignty in the 1970s.’

‘Bilateral ties have been strengthened over the years in the execution of cooperation programs on several fields, such as health, education, science and technology.’

Asked about the situation in the Tigray region, the diplomat said that ‘in the last eight months the Government of Ethiopia has made all possible efforts to free that area from the scourge of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), as well as ‘to ensure the rule of law, rebuild the infrastructure destroyed by the TPLF, which has launched attacks in the Amhara and Afar regions, endangered the lives of civilians and carried out massacres of civilians and looted properties.’

The ambassador added in this regard that the TPFL ‘prohibited the distribution of food aid to the population of Tigray who refused to join’ its ranks.

On another hot topic, the filling of the Great Renaissance Dam (GERD), a cause of friction with Egypt, Ambassador Sibru said that ‘the second filling of that reservoir passed without causing significant damage to the countries of the course (the river Nile).’

He elaborated on that particular issue that ‘the truth behind the position of the Ethiopian Government has been evidenced,’ while ‘he has explained Ethiopia’s position at the GERD negotiations led by the African Union in a way that leads to a win-win solution.’
