Syrian FM states that US blockade affects children and elderly

Damascus, Aug 11 (Prensa Latina) The unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States and the European Union affect all segments of the Syrian people, included children, women and the elderly, Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mekdad stated.

The fact that some countries continue adopting such sanctions against the peoples is an evidence of the falsehood of their claims to work for the good of those peoples, the foreign minister said during his meeting in Damascus with Omar Abdi, Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The diplomat reiterated that the blockade affects the livelihoods of the Syrian people and prevents their access to food, medicine, electricity and other basic needs.

Al-Mekdad stressed the necessity that all international organizations working in the humanitarian fields in Syria, included UNICEF, comply with the humanitarian work standards, and expressed the willingness to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to those who deserve it.

In turn, Abdi explained that the access of Syrian children to health, water and education is one of UNICEF’s priorities.
