Twelve soldiers killed in terrorist attack in Burkina Faso

Ouagadougou, Aug 9 (Prensa Latina) Twelve soldiers were killed and eight were wounded during a terrorist attack on Sunday in northwestern Burkina Faso, bordering Mali, the Ministry of Communications confirmed in Ouagadougou on Monday.

According to the source, soldiers ‘from the Army and the Rapid Action Monitoring and Intervention Group (GARSI) were ambushed’ in the Boucle du Mouhoun region.

Communications Minister Ousseni Tamboura stated in a communiqué, ‘Provisional toll stands at 12 soldiers killed and eight wounded,’ seven are still missing.

The ambush occurred in the Toeni Commune and was in retaliation for the deaths of two fundamentalist leaders active in the same region, who were killed on Saturday, a source from the security forces informed.

Since 2015, this African state in the Sahel region has been facing frequent attacks by confessional extremist groups, mainly in the northern and eastern regions near Mali and Niger, countries also punished by the violence of radical armed groups identified as terrorists by the authorities.
