Time is up, according to the world’s scientists who have just issued their strongest warning to date with the release of a climate report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the daily reported.
The opinion, published by The Hill, describes how little time remains to slow warming and put the world on track to stay within the threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial temperatures that scientists say can keep the climate relatively safe.
At least, it is essential that we slow warming fast enough to keep the 1.5-degree target in sight, even with a limited overshoot, the text noted.
It warned that the phenomenon is accelerating and each additional increase in climate pollution causes irreversible damage. Last month’s record-breaking heat waves and floods will become increasingly frequent unless we slow the rate of warming, it said.
This is the decade of action to bend not only the emissions curve, but also, more crucially, the warming curve. Heat is the enemy we must defeat, the experts stressed.
