UN concerned about tension between Lebanon and Israel

Beirut, Aug 7 (Prensa Latina) The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Joanna Wronecka, today expressed concern over the exchange of fire between the Arab nation and Israel and the growing tension on the common border.

In a communiqué, Wronecka specified that in the exercise of her good offices, she began political contacts with all the parties involved.

The text warns of the possibility of a miscalculation with the risk of serious consequences and calls for maximum restraint to avoid escalation.

It also calls on all parties to refrain from the use of violence and to restore calm.

The UN official urges respect for UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended an armed conflict between Lebanon and Israel in 2006, from which Hizbullah emerged victorious.

During the last hours, the Islamic Resistance and the Tel Aviv regime fired shells at each other, although so far there are no reports of casualties nor material damage.

Israel resorted to its aircraft to bomb a site in southern Lebanon in retaliation for rockets launched without any group claiming responsibility for the action so far.
