Nineteen people killed in attack on Niger-Burkina Faso border

Niamey, Aug 2 (Prensa Latina) An attack perpetrated against a military convoy in Niger's Boni village, bordering Burkina Faso, resulted in 19 people killed (18 soldiers and one civilian), the Ministry of Defense confirmed on Monday.

The source informed on Sunday that 15 soldiers had been killed, seven injured and six missing, but the figure increased in the latest report, www.actuniger.com reported.

The military version of the events noted that an Army caravan was attacked near Boni, in the northern region of the Torodi department, and a vehicle with reinforcements was hit by the a landmine as it was going to support the besieged soldiers.

The Ministry of Defense stated that security forces with support from the aviation conducted an operation in the area to neutralize the suspects and sent its condolences to the relatives of the victims of the attack.

Africa’s Sahel region faces a serious deterioration of the security situation as a result of actions taken by terrorist groups, mainly those affiliated with Al Qaeda and the Islamic State.
