ROSATOM Director General Alexey Likhachev recalled in a message that the construction of the reactor, considered the main work object of the future Center, began on July 26.
Based in the Bolivian city of El Alto, the project ‘is unique globally. It is located 4,000 meters above sea level, and as such is the highest nuclear facility in the world,’ ROSATOM indicated.
According to Russian authorities, the facility is one of the largest projects from the Eurasian nation in Latin America and opens up new opportunities to export innovations from the Russian nuclear industry to countries in the region, TASS news agency stated.
The CIDTN will have top technologies that can significantly improve the living standard of the Bolivian population and will be used as a driving force for the development of science and high technologies in the Andean nation.
On March 6, 2016, Russia and Bolivia signed an intergovernmental cooperation agreement for the peaceful use of nuclear energy, which included the construction of the center in the city of El Alto.
