In a communiqué issued by the Foreign and Health ministries, the Spanish Government emphasized that this is a fulfillment of the commitment announced during the Ibero-American Summit in Andorra.
It explained that after the agreement reached between AstraZeneca, Covax and Spain, the first donations will amount to more than 750,000 doses and will go to Paraguay, Guatemala, Peru, Ecuador and Nicaragua.
The Government of Spain has committed a total of 22.5 million vaccines authorized in the European Union and used in Spain, and at least 7.5 million of them will be donated to Ibero-American countries.
The Government explained that the donations will be channeled through Covax, a mechanism supervised by the World Health Organization (WHO), with the logistical support of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO).
On the other hand, it noted that the distribution will be progressive, as Spain makes the vaccines available to the mechanism.
