Labor Party wins Saint Lucia’s general election

Castries, Jul 27 (Prensa Latina) The Saint Lucia Labor Party (SLP), led by Philip Pierre, has won the general elections in that country and thwarted the efforts of outgoing Prime Minister Allen Chastanet for his re-election, it was reported on Tuesday.

In the July 26 elections, the people in Santa Lucia gave the SLP, until now in the opposition, 13 of 17 seats available in Parliament, according to the preliminary results issued by the Electoral Department in that Caribbean nation.

The United Workers’ Party, chaired by Chastanet, only retained two seats on the legislative body, while the remainder were occupied by independent candidates, among them former Prime Minister Stevenson King.

More than 160,000 voters cast their ballots on Monday to elect a new government in Saint Lucia, a small Caribbean island with some 180,000 inhabitants.

Observers from the Caribbean Community, the Organization of American States, and the Commonwealth monitored the elections.
